Questions? we have answers
1. 1. What is the primary mission of Cruisin’ for K9’s?
Our mission is to foster collaboration among local businesses and communities across New Jersey to provide critical financial support and essential equipment to police K9 units, ensuring these specialized teams can perform their duties safely and effectively.
2. How did the organization start?
Cruisin’ for K9’s was founded specifically to assist in replacing outdated vehicles for the Mt. Holly K9 Unit, addressing an immediate need while building a sustainable long-term network of support for K9 officers.
3. What are the benefits for businesses that join the coalition?
Partnering businesses receive several perks, including a K9C membership certificate signed by K9 Officers, a social media video tour by K9 Taz, and logo placement on our event pages.
4. How can my business host a fundraiser?
Businesses can get involved by setting a specific item to donate 100% of sales from, or by hosting a dedicated fundraiser day or event night where a portion of the proceeds goes directly to the foundation.
5. What happens during Community Day events?
Community Day is a major outreach initiative where sponsors are recognized for their support. Participating businesses can receive a free booth space and a full-page ad in the event program to showcase their commitment to public safety.
6. Can I pet the K9s when I see them at community events?
While our K9s are friendly and love being part of the community, they are highly trained working professionals. We ask that you always ask the handler for permission before approaching or attempting to pet a K9. When they are “on the clock,” they need to stay focused on their mission.
7. How is the K9 Unit funded, and how can I help?
Many K9 programs rely heavily on community donations and specialized grants for equipment, veterinary care, and ongoing training. You can support us by participating in our Direct Mission Impact fundraisers or by donating through our official “Plan a Fundraiser” portal. Every contribution goes directly toward the health and safety of our four-legged officers.
8. What happens to a K9 officer once they retire?
After a dedicated career of service, our K9s typically retire to live as “civilian” pets with their handlers and their families. Because of the deep bond formed during years of work, the handler usually adopts the dog to ensure they enjoy a comfortable and well-deserved retirement.
9. What kind of specialized training do the dogs undergo?
Our K9s and handlers undergo hundreds of hours of initial certification and continuous weekly training. They are typically dual-purpose, meaning they are trained in patrol work (tracking and apprehension) as well as specialized detection (such as narcotics or explosives).
10. What is the relationship between the Police Department and the Foundation?
While the K9 Unit is a specialized division of the Mt. Holly Police Department, the Cruising for K9s Foundation is a dedicated 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established to provide the supplemental funding the unit needs to thrive. The Foundation ensures that our K9 teams have access to the highest quality equipment, specialized medical care, and advanced training tools that may fall outside the standard municipal budget, allowing the community to play a direct role in the unit’s success.
